Which wax should you book?

The right service mostly comes down to the area and the result you're after. A few pointers so you book the right thing the first time:

Eyebrow waxing

Eyebrow waxing cleans up stray hairs and gives your brows a crisper shape while following your natural arch. If you're growing your brows out to make them fuller, tell your technician and she'll only remove the truly stray hairs. For extra definition, eyebrow tinting can be added in the same visit.

Face: upper lip, chin or full face

Upper lip and chin are booked separately. If you want several facial areas done at once, a full-face wax is often the simplest option; ask what it covers when you book.

Leg and arm waxing

Half legs generally covers the lower leg, while full legs goes up to the top of the thighs. Arms work the same way. Before summer, shorts season or a winter getaway down south, full-leg waxing is a common choice. If it's your first leg wax, book it a few days before the event rather than the day before, so your skin has time to settle.

Bikini or Brazilian wax

A bikini wax tidies the edges of the swimsuit line. A Brazilian wax goes further and removes most of the hair in the intimate area. If you're torn between the two, simply describe the result you want at the start of your appointment and your technician will explain the difference before she begins.

How to prepare for your wax

Good preparation makes the session quicker, more comfortable and gives a cleaner result. The most important rule is hair length: wax needs about 0.5 cm (roughly the size of a grain of rice) to grip the hair properly. Too short and the hair stays put; too long and removal is less comfortable.

  • Let hair grow for about two to three weeks after your last shave to reach the right length.
  • Exfoliate gently a day or two before, not on the day of your appointment.
  • Arrive with clean, dry skin, with no lotion, oil or deodorant on the area to be waxed.
  • Avoid tanning, strong sun and sunburn in the days leading up to your wax.
  • For a bikini or Brazilian wax, loose clothing is more comfortable for the trip home.
  • If you're sensitive, some people find waxing less uncomfortable outside of their period.

Sensitive skin and medications: tell us before we start

Some products and situations make skin more fragile under wax. Before your appointment begins, always let your technician know if you use retinoids (retinol-type creams or medications) or strong exfoliating products, or if you have a skin condition, irritation, a cut or a sunburn on the area.

We don't give medical advice. If you take medication, have a skin condition or are unsure about your situation, check with your doctor or pharmacist first to find out whether waxing is right for you. If needed, your technician can adjust the area or suggest rescheduling.

Waxing aftercare

It's normal for skin to look a little red or feel tender right after waxing; this usually fades within a few hours. To keep skin smooth and calm, follow these steps for the next 24 to 48 hours:

  • Stay out of direct sun, tanning and tanning beds.
  • Don't exfoliate the waxed area for a day or two.
  • Skip the sauna, hot tub, very hot baths and intense workouts that make you sweat heavily.
  • Wear loose clothing over the area, especially after a bikini or Brazilian wax.
  • Hold off on perfume and scented products; a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer is all you need.
  • After that, gentle exfoliation two or three times a week helps prevent ingrown hairs.

How often should you come back?

Regrowth varies from person to person, but most people come back every three to six weeks depending on the area. Eyebrows often need more frequent upkeep, while legs can last a little longer. Between appointments, avoid shaving the area: a razor shortens the hair and means waiting again for it to reach the right length.
